Lula Nicolette Poulos, age 98, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, June 7, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Christine Poulos, and her three younger siblings, Victor J. Poulos, Tassie Poulos Portulas and Pete J. Poulos, all lifelong residents of Atlanta. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Lula was born at home on October 25, 1921 and grew up in Atlanta’s south side in a predominantly Greek-American neighborhood. She attended Commercial High School, and during her teenage years she sang and played guitar on a local radio station with her sister, Tassie. One of her first jobs was at the downtown Atlanta Rich’s selling Revlon and Coty cosmetics. She was a beautiful and outstanding saleswoman and was approached by Revlon head, Charles Revson, with an offer to work in New York to sell the line there. As a single, young Greek girl, this idea was quickly quashed by her parents; however, in the late 1950’s, she did make the move to New York and loved working and living in the city. In the 1960’s, Lula returned home to Atlanta and worked as a restaurant expediter for many years with two of Atlanta’s top Greek supper clubs.
After retiring, Lula devoted most of her time to her church, The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation. She took part in many church activities, working for years at the Atlanta Greek Festivals, acting as a greeter and “the coffee lady” after Sunday services, participating as a member of The Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society, and for years helped to prepare meals for many of the church events. In 2005, Lula was awarded The Archangel Michael Honors medal by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta in recognition of her many years of service to her church.
Lula was “Aunt Lula” to everyone. She loved to sing and dance and had a wicked sense of humor. She loved her family more than anything in this world, and even though she never had children of her own, she took great joy in taking part in the lives of her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She will be truly missed by all.
