Luther Herman Chambers, of Decatur, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2011. He was a member of Scott Boulevard Baptist Church for over 50 years, where he was a deacon and loyal servant to Jesus Christ. Luther was born in 1921 in Gainesville, Georgia, as an only child to the late Effie Chapman and Guy Chambers. When he was two years old, his family moved to Decatur, where he attended Decatur City Schools and graduated from Decatur Boys High. Mr. Chambers served his country during WWII in Co. D, 4th Armored Replacement Battalion (Tanks and Half-tracks) at Fort Knox KY. He married Jeri Savage in 1943 and they had two lovely daughters. The oldest died tragically in 1949 and his beloved wife died in 2007. He was an automotive technician mechanic and retired in 1989 after serving over 44 years at Boomershine Pontiac in Downtown Atlanta. He was a Mason in Georgia for over 50 years. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Rev. James Wray of Snellville; grandsons, Michael Wray of Bethlehem and Kevin Wray and his wife Jessica and their children, Ginny and Sean Wray, all of South Carolina. Also surviving is his loyal and faithful dog, Buddy. Mr. Chambers was cremated and a memorial service will be held at 11 am, Saturday, March 5, 2011, at Scott Boulevard Baptist Church, with Dr. Michael Davis and Rev. James Wray officiating. A private burial service will be held at a later time. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
