Lynda Standard Riley

August 5, 1921 — September 21, 2008

Mrs. Lynda Standard Riley, 87, of Atlanta died Sunday, September 21, 2008. She was born in Wilkes County, GA to Iris and Sim Standard. She graduated from Thomson High School in 1938, the Georgia State College for Women College in 1942 and completed graduate work for administration at the University of Georgia. She taught in the Florence, SC elementary school in the late 50’s to the early 60’s and received the Florence, SC Young Woman of the Year Award for 1958.  Mrs. Riley then taught at Medlock Elementary School from 1962 until 1977. She was the Assistant Principal of Montgomery Elementary and the Principal of Montgomery Elementary and Wadsworth Elementary Schools. She retired from the DeKalb County School System in 1982 after 20 years of service. After retirement, Mrs. Riley developed a passion for china painting and taught Sunday School at Briarcliff Baptist Church for many years. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Sorority, and Georgia State President in 1995 of The World Organization China Painters. She also volunteered at Montclair Elementary School. She was preceded in death by her husband, William McWhorter (Bill) Riley, Sr. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Sheryl Riley, Jr. of Lilburn; sister, Elsie Hobbs and husband Bill of Thomson, GA; grandsons, Shane Riley of Smyrna, Vann Riley and wife Christie of Alpharetta; and three great grandchildren, Brayden, Grant, Blake Riley; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Briarcliff Baptist Church on Thursday, September 25th at 1 p.m., Dr. Bill Bigger and Dr. Paul Baxter officiating. She will lie in state an hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Those desiring may send contributions to Briarcliff Baptist Church, 3039 Briarcliff Road, Atlanta, GA 30329. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 24th at A. S. Turner & Sons.
