Marcia Lynn Crow Pratt, of Atlanta, GA, passed away on April 1, 2025 surrounded by the love of her family. She was born May 31, 1949 in Mobile, AL and was raised in Mountain Brook, AL, the third of four sisters. She graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1967, earned an undergraduate degree in social work from Auburn University in 1971 and rounded out her education with a Masters in Education from UAB in the 1980s.
After graduating from Auburn, Lynn lived in Tacoma, Washington, where her husband was stationed with the Army, for several years. She then returned home to Birmingham, where she worked at the Alabama Department of Human Resources applying her gifts of gentleness and patience to serve, support and befriend people in need. Later, as a teacher at Jackson Elementary for over a decade, this same gentle patience and warmth made her loved by generations of her students. And to nobody's surprise, when Lynn retired to Atlanta to help her son and his wife raise their children, her warm heart and kindness soon resulted in yet another community welcoming her as one of its own.
Lynn was an avid reader and seeker, studying philosophies and different faith traditions and practicing acceptance and gratitude as the foundations of her daily life. She was driven by love and appreciation of the natural world, which for Lynn encompassed a deep and abiding respect for a diversity of people and ideas. She looked for and celebrated beauty in the world and in each person. Her family and friends were her greatest joy and participating in and contributing to shared celebrations and thoughtful discussions was a gift she gave to all who loved her. Lynn's lasting impact was made through her thoughtfulness, through listening carefully and patiently, person by person, to nurture a more caring world, building relationships that were deeply cherished by those who had the good fortune to know and be loved by her.
Lynn had the support of a loving family and many friends during her brave battle with cancer over the past three years. She is survived by her beloved son, Andy, his wife, Jessica, and their two sons, James and Jackson, all of Atlanta, who were her life's greatest joy. Other survivors include her sisters Michele Higgs (Zach) of Huntsville and Debby McCullough (Mac) of Mountain Brook, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews whom she dearly loved, and was dearly loved by. She is predeceased by her parents Helene DeBlanc Crow and James Sylvester Crow, and her sister Denise Andrews (Walter).
The funeral service will be held at A.S. Turner & Sons on Saturday, April 12 at 12:00 p.m., with a visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. and a reception to follow the service at Wahoo! Grill. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Fernbank at https://www.fernbankmuseum.org/support/ways-to-give/give-online/.
