Mae Jo Bowman

Mae Jo Shivers Bowman, 79, of Decatur, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2017. Born March 6, 1938, in Griffin, GA, she was the daughter of the late Wilson Samuel Shivers and Ruth Ellen Biles Gordon Shivers. The youngest of 4 children, she enjoyed growing up in the Virginia Highland area of Atlanta. She attended Grady High School and Marsh Business School. Jo was married to Roy Richard Bowman for 55 years until his death in 2013. Originally a member of Jackson Hill Baptist Church in Atlanta, she and her family later moved their membership to Rehoboth Baptist Church in Tucker. Jo was a former church secretary to the Rev. Louie D. Newton and later a Certified Meeting Professional with Dunn and Bradstreet Software. Jo loved her family and enjoyed spoiling her granddaughters. Her favorite time of the year was Christmas. Jo hosted an annual Christmas brunch for family, friends, neighbors and anyone else who wanted to come in and enjoy a little Christmas spirit with a side of her legendary jalapeno cheese grits and hot apple cider.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jo was preceded in death by her sisters, Sara Ellen Sousa and Miriam Adams, her brother, Fred Gordon and her brother-in-law, Bob Sousa.

She is survived by her son Wade Bowman and wife Carol; son Andy Bowman and wife Heather; granddaughters Isabella Ravagni, Taylor Underwood, Rachel Bowman, and Lilly Grace Bowman; her brother-in-law, Walter Adams and sister-in-law, Colleen Gordon, along with many nephews and nieces.

A service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 1PM at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, GA, followed by interment at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 5th from 7-9 at the funeral home.
