Peacefully and surrounded by her family, it is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Mae Cheong Wong, of Stone Mountain, Georgia on October 28, 2021 at the age of 81. She was born in Ipoh, Malaysia and moved to the United States to pursue higher education. After attending the University of Michigan, where she received highest honors in both her undergraduate and master’s degrees in molecular biology, she then moved to Washington DC where she met and married the love of her life, her husband of more than 50 years, Dr. Kwei-Hay Wong.
During her professional career, Mae worked in the STEM field at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Washington DC and later at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. It is here in Atlanta, GA where she and her husband had their two sons. She then gave up her promising scientific career to focus on raising the two sons and taking care of her family. Mae was a caring, generous, and kind person who always put her family’s well-being before her own. She instilled the importance of good education for her two sons and four grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of more than 50 years Dr. Kwei-Hay Wong, son and daughter-in-law, Anthony (Tony) and Valerie Wong of Orlando FL, son Kenneth Wong of Lawrenceville GA, and four grandchildren Nathan Wong, Jackson Foster-Wong, Eva Wong, and Nikoletta Wong.
A visitation will be held on Friday, November 5, 2021 from 1:00-2:00pm immediately followed by a celebration of life at A.S. Turner Funeral Home in Decatur, Georgia. In lieu of flowers please consider contributing to the Alzheimer's Association or the charity of your choice.
