Mardell M. Holman passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at age 89. She was born in Portland, ME, where she was raised and started her own family. In 1955 the family moved to Decatur, GA when her husband, Howard, was transferred to the Southeast. Our mother’s greatest love and joy in life were her seven children. She did not go a day without reminding them that their role in life was to always take care of those who were less fortunate. She was an early advocate of Civil Rights, when Civil Rights were not popular. There was nobody who had a greater compassion and love for the needy. Our mother was a brilliant and creative woman, who was ahead of her time. She wrote songs and novels, designed and renovated her homes on an ongoing basis, and was a space and time efficiency expert. She was passionate about politics and made sure her opinions were heard. She wrote numerous letters over the years to the Letters to the Editor section of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, many of which were printed, and was honored by the AJC for her contributions. She took great pleasure in attending plays and participating in Great Books discussion. She was very happy and contented caring for and “puttering” around her home and garden. Mother was always there for all of her children. We were truly blessed to have her as long as we did. We love you Mama. She is survived by her seven children: Rosemary Schneringer of Gig Harbor, WA, Howard Holman, Jr. of Vidalia, GA, Holly Holman of San Francisco, CA, Cynthia Holman and Kathy Ames, both of Stone Mountain, GA, Teresa Holman of San Francisco, CA, Bill Holman of Buford, GA, fifteen grandchildren and eleven great-grand children. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff in the South and West pavilions at the Fountainview Center for Alzheimer’s disease.
