Margaret Charlotte Sandell (nee Nader), age 94, died on November 18, joining her beloved pastor brother Freddy and a host of loved ones who preceded her. Margy grew up in Altoona, PA, and attended Davis College in Binghamton, NY, where she met her husband, Walter. Together, they engaged in pastoral ministry in churches in Meridian, MS, Birmingham, AL, and Atlanta, GA, followed by many years of service through Sandell Ministries, Inc., numerous missions trips throughout the world, and interim pastorates in Australia, Puerto Rico, and the US. They were married and ministered together for 74 years.
Margy, Walter, Cliff and Beth arrived in Atlanta in 1960 to 64 years of joy, friendship, and ministry across First Alliance Church, Sandell Ministries, Inc., and the myriad of friends Margy made through her correspondence, sharing of books, and opening of her home. She worked tirelessly as an administrator who in more ways than can be counted enabled Walter's ministry as well as her own. During the last years of her life, she and Walter found their spiritual home and friends at Westminster Presbyterian Church, PCA. During those years, both her son and daughter received their Masters of Divinity from Columbia Theology Seminary and Alliance Theological Seminary, and Cliff was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and served as a hospital chaplain.
Margy taught women’s Bible classes and deeply loved her years teaching the College and Career Sunday School class. She loved the study of the Scriptures, was an avid reader, played and enjoyed classical music and hymns, and was known for her hospitality. In 2018, she and Walter received honorary Doctorate of Divinity degrees from Davis College in recognition of 70 years of dedicated pastoral service, the first woman to do so in the college’s 118-year history. She was a much loved wife, mother, sister, and friend, and she will be deeply missed. Margaret is survived by her husband, Walter, son and daughter, Cliff and Beth, their families, her sister Betty, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
The service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, PCA and officiated by Rev. Aaron Messner. The church will be live streaming the service on YouTube for those who are unable to attend in person.
