Margaret Johnson Strickland, 89, of Lilburn, died February 27, 2011. A native of Hudson, North Carolina, Mrs. Strickland attended Mars Hill College and Appalachian State Teacher College, where she studied home economics and drama. She graduated from Kings Business College, where she studied Business Administration. Her first job was secretary to J. E. Broyhill and Emory McCall at Lenoir Chair Company (now Broyhill's). She later worked at Waldensian Hosiery Mills, as personnel manager and paymaster. In 1946, she moved to Atlanta, where she met her husband while attending Georgia State University. Mrs. Strickland's career took many turns from working for the Georgia State Legislature, state director for United Teenage Pageants of Georgia, Florida and Tennessee, to her involvement in real estate and catering. However, her passion was in horticulture and flower arranging. Margaret was a past president and life member of both DeKalb Federation of Garden Clubs and Redbud District, as well as a life member of Garden Club of Georgia. She was a member emeritus of the North Georgia Judges Council of Flower Show Judges, Designers Garden Club, Smoke Rise Garden Club and the Lady Bugs Garden Club. Mrs. Strickland was a long time member of Briarlake Baptist Church and was a current member of Mountain Park First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Nolan Strickland, and a grandson, Adam Anthony Cooper. Mrs. Strickland is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Kam Hudder of Lawrenceville, Susan and Stan Brause of Louisiana and Karen and Harrison Waller of Lilburn; sons, Dan Strickland and Greg Strickland, both of Lilburn; grandchildren, Kim Karnitz, Travis Strickland, Jason Strickland, Jessica Waller and Jennifer Waller: great grandchildren, Samantha, Nicholas, Nathan, Aiden, Ava and a boy to be born in July. The funeral service will be held 11 am, Thursday, March 3, 2011, in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons with Rev. Larry Sullivan officiating. Interment, Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 5-8 Wednesday evening at A. S. Turner & Sons.
