Marie Goodyear O'Steen, 100, of DeKalb, passed away October 11, 2010 in DeKalb, IL. She was born in Oxford, Georgia. She majored in French at Emory University and graduated in 1930 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She married Alton O’Steen of Douglas, Georgia in 1930 and they moved to New York City for his doctoral work in music education at Columbia University Teacher’s College. She was a homemaker before earning her teaching certificate at the University of Alabama. She became a teacher of English and foreign languages full time and later as a substitute. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of DeKalb, Illinois and United Methodist Women, and the a past member of League of Women Voters. She was a musician all of her life playing cello and singing with a fine soprano voice in choirs and choruses wherever she lived. Surviving are two Daughters - Molly Holtsford of DeKalb, IL, Nancy & John Cipriani of Chicago, IL; Son - David & Wendy O'Steen of Aberdeen, MD; 10 Grandchildren - Timothy & Cathy Gunther Holtsford of Columbia, MO, David & Nanci Holtsford of Lipan, TX, Amy(Natalie Wittmann) Holtsford of Grayslake, IL, Stephen & Jeanine Holtsford of St. Charles, IL, Laurie & Mark McClellan of Birmingham, AL, Tracy & Mark Ryan of Berwyn, IL, Julie Cipriani of Las Vegas, NV, Susan & Gary Gross of Chicago, IL, Nathan O'Steen of Chandler, AZ, Abby & Thomas Reeder of Fletcher, NC; . She was preceded in death by her father, Nolan Austin Goodyear Sr., mother, Emma Goodyear. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2010, 2:30 PM at Decatur Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church, 321 Oak St, DeKalb, Ill. 60115 or DeKalb Co. Nursing & Rehab Center, 2600 N. Annie Glidden Rd, DeKalb, Ill. 60115.
