Marion Austin Smith, 84, of Winder, Georgia passed away in her home on Oct. 5, 2015. Marion was born in 1931 to Lawton Paul Austin and Annie Gillespie Austin in Atlanta, Georgia, where she spent her life until retiring to Winder. After graduating from West Fulton High School in 1948, Marion married and enjoyed raising her four beloved children, nurturing close friendships, and participating in church-life. Marion was a lifelong member of the Church of God, holding special affiliations with the Hairston Road, Avondale and Inman Park Churches of God, where she served as the pianist, fed and clothed the homeless, and shared her beautiful smile and God's love with all. When her children were older, Marion accepted a position with Rich's Department Store, where she became enchanted with the children's department and took great pleasure in helping, especially, the grandparents who shopped there. Marion retired from Rich's before moving from Tucker, Georgia to Winder. In addition to selflessly raising her four children and being a devoted and adoring Meme to her grandchildren, Marion cherished many lifelong friendships. Recognized by both family and friends as a loving, devoted, cheerful person, Marion was also known for her generous spirit, always being the first to give to others from whatever she had. Her hobbies included cooking, playing piano, listening to gospel music, shopping for bargains, buying the BOGO items at Publix, reading the newspapers, and feeding the birds. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Donald Austin. Marion is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Laura Smith; her daughter, Alana Smith; her daughter and son-in law, Lisa and Mort Borland; and her son and daughter-in-law, Derek and Beth Smith; five grandchildren: Austin Borland, Cole Borland, Lauren Smith, Birch Smith, and Graydon Smith; her sister, Dorothy Kerlin; and a number of other dear relatives and close friends. A celebration of life is planned for 11:00 a.m. on October 10, 2015 in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur. Visitation will precede the service at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at Crestlawn Cemetery following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Iman Park Church of God, C/O Rev. Doug Meeks, 1826 Robinhill Ct., Tucker, Ga. 30084. A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
