Marjorie Broyles Wallis

October 30, 1935 — August 3, 2010

Marjorie Broyles Wallis, age 74, of Decatur, Georgia died peacefully with her children at her side on August 3rd, 2010, following an arduous, year-long journey with pancreatic cancer. She is predeceased by her husband, Capt. A.K. Broyles Jr.; second husband James W. Wallis; and her parents, Dr. and Mrs. C.M. Creech. Throughout her lifetime, Margie surrounded herself with family and friends, and touched the hearts of everyone she met.

Born October 30, 1935 in Johnson City, Tennessee, Margie led an adventurous life first as the daughter of a military doctor and later as a military wife. She travelled extensively and was pleased to recall the 22 moves she made over the years to include 20 different cities, 12 states and two countries.

Margie graduated from Science Hill HS and East Tennessee State College, both in Johnson City, TN. It was there that she met and married her soul mate, Capt. A.K. Broyles Jr. Together they travelled the country and globe, having three children in their short time together before A.K. was tragically killed in Vietnam in 1965. Margie later relocated her family to Virginia, where she married her second husband, James W. Wallis, and became mother to his four children. Eventually they returned to Tennessee to care for her ailing parents. Margie and Jim spent many years there, first in Jonesboro on the Nolichucky River and then in Dayton on the Tennessee River.

People of all walks who encountered Margie were drawn to her caring, welcoming personality. She was always kind, thoughtful, generous, and charitable in her opinion of others. Her actions reflected this benevolence on every level. She loved to dance and was both a student and instructor for most of her adulthood. Margie made many friends along the way and was well-loved and highly respected by all who knew her.

Margie is survived by her sister, Bette C. Lucas; children, Alvin K. Broyles III (Carol Ann Davies), Elizabeth B. Stern (Tim R. Stern), and Sherry M. Broyles (Kris Ernst); step-children, Mike Wallis (Barbara Wallis), Bo Wallis (Carol Wallis), and Joe Wallis; daughter-in-law, Sharon Wallis; son-in-law, James Burke (Michelle Burke); grandchildren, Alvin K. Broyles IV, Stephan Broyles, Reid Broyles, Glen Stern, Adam Stern, Michael Wallis, Michelle Wallis, and Jamie Wallis. In addition, she is survived by her loving companion of 12 years, Dudley “Dude” the cat.

A celebration of Margie’s life will be held at Holy Trinity Parish Chapel, 515 East Ponce de Leon Avenue in Decatur, GA, at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 6, 2010, and will be officiated by the Reverend Allan Sandlin.
