Martha Byers Barry Smith

Martha Byers Barry Smith, age 97, passed away on August 26, 2017. Born in Fountain Inn, SC to the late John Andral Barry and Euzelia Hamrick Barry, she was predeceased by her husband, R. Theodore Smith, and a son, Isaac Barry Smith. Martha (or Mrs. Smith) was a graduate of Furman University and Southwestern Baptist Seminary. She served as Director of Religious Education at the First Baptist Church in Charleston, SC from 1945 – 1950 and as a teacher at Morningside Elementary School in Atlanta in the 1950's. She was an active member of her churches, a former member of Woodlawn Baptist Church and a current member of Avondale Estates First Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School for over 60 years. She is survived by a son, R. Theodore Smith, Jr., of Knoxville, TN and a daughter, Andrea Barry Smith, of Decatur, GA. Services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 30th at 1:00 pm in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons with interment at Decatur Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Aug. 29th from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur.
