Martha Elizabeth Hobbs Smith went on to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday,
May 30, 2012. She was born on June 26, 1941 in Atlanta, to William Joseph Hobbs, Sr. and Jane Elizabeth Slocum Hobbs. 'Martha is survived by her husband of 50 years, Joseph Harold Smith, Sr. and her five children and their families: Joseph Harold Smith, Jr. and wife, Kimberly Markham Smith and children- Savannah, Joseph and Chandler; Patricia Laurie Smith Benefield and husband, Michael Orie Benefield, Sr. and children- Orie, Kayla and Elijah (Eli); Karen Sundi Smith Huff and husband, Gregory Edward Huff and children- Justin and Elizabeth; William Eric DeWitte Smith; Alex Matthew Smith, Sr. and wife, Alison Conner Smith and children- Alex, Zachary, Mary Grace (Gracie), and Ryan. Martha is also survived by her two brothers, William Joseph Hobbs, Jr. and wife, Ann Miller Hobbs and Scott Allen Hobbs and wife, Nancy Ford Hobbs and nieces and nephews. Martha was a devoted and faithful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her remarkable care and devotion extended beyond her immediate family to anyone and everyone who knew her. Martha was a lady of noble character as described in Proverbs 31. Martha was a devout Christian and faithful member, Sunday school teacher, nursery worker, Bible school teacher, youth chaperone and leader at Indian Creek Baptist Church, in Stone Mountain for over 50 years. Martha exemplified the "Golden Rule", Matthew 7:12 in all that she did. Prior to her marriage Martha attended Capitol View Methodist Church, in Atlanta, where at the age of 12 she came to know Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Martha graduated from Sylvan Hills High School in Atlanta in 1959 and attended college at The University of Georgia's 1962 Marietta Campus. Her employment included administration at Acme Steel in East Point, participation in the family hardware businesses of Smith Hardware, Decatur, General Hardware, Atlanta, Handy Ace Hardware in Tucker and Dacula. Above all was her passion to care and serve her husband, family and others. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 3 at 4:00 pm at Indian Creek Baptist Church, Stone Mountain with Dr. Bill Gordon and Rev. Sam Davis officiating. Interment will be at Indian Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to services. The family will also receive friends Saturday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, Decatur, GA.
