Martha Williams

Martha Williams of Decatur died on November 28, 2017 under the care of Hospice Atlanta.
She was born Martha Fambro on January 28, 1923, in Rockmart, Georgia to Mattie (Lane) and Clifford Lundy Fambro. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Jean Fambro McRae, her husband, Jim Williams, her son, Jimmy Williams and her son-in-law, Jon Middleton.
Martha graduated from Rockmart High School as Valedictorian of her class and was awarded the Congressional Scholarship from her district. She attended the University of Georgia and majored in Sociology. While there she was a member of Delta Delta Delta and served her sorority in several elected offices, including pledge trainer. She met her future husband in Athens.
Martha and Jim were married in 1945 while Jim was on leave from serving in the Navy in Europe. While he was away, Martha held various jobs, including teaching in Rockmart and working in the personnel department at the Bell Bomber Plant. The couple moved to Decatur, Georgia in 1953. Martha returned to teaching in 1960, first at Clairemont Elementary, and later at Renfroe Middle School. She reveled in her profession, and particularly enjoyed teaching in the gifted program.
She was a member of Decatur First United Methodist Church and the Decatur Junior League. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed the Westchester Garden Club.
Martha is survived by her children, Jean Williams Middleton, and Charles Williams (Terri); grandchildren, Jay Middleton (Ashley), Andrew Middleton (Meredith), Vivian Masi (Joey), Caroline Williams, and Hailey Williams; great grandchildren, Adelaide and Celia Middleton, Vita, Lane and Luca Masi, her dear brothers-in-law, George Williams , and Hugh McRae, her sister-in-law and friend, Julia Williams, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons on December 9th at 11:00 am, with visitation at 10:00 am, and reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Atlanta or the Alzheimers Association. A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory, Decatur.
