Martin Fraser, 78, of Atlanta, GA, passed away on December 17th. Dr. Fraser is survived by his wife Carol of 55 years, daughter Jean, son-in-law Walther, grandson Nicholas, and an amazing group of friends and colleagues.
He attended St. Louis University and earned a B.S.(Math)’63, M.S. (Math)’65, and Ph.D. (Math with a concentration in Statistics)’72. He was commissioned 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force in June 1963 and served his country during the Vietnam conflict from 1963 until 1969. During his service he served in Space Systems Command and achieved the rank of Captain.
Marty joined the Mathematics Department of Georgia State University in 1972 where he taught Statistics and Computer Science. In 1999, he became the first Chair of the Department of Computer Science. When he retired in 2005, he was presented with a plaque that included the following:
“You have accepted the challenge to soar above the world and to overcome barriers to success that would have caused others to falter and fall. You have been decisive where others have hesitated.”
He participated in Scottish activities, attending the Stone Mountain Highland Games for over 30 years, and was a member of the Fraser Society of North America and the St. Andrews Society of Atlanta.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, December 23 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Church in Decatur, GA. The family will receive guests a half hour prior to the service at the church.
A brief military service will be held following the church service at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, 3150 Lawrenceville Hwy, Tucker GA.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial donations be sent to St. Thomas More Church, 636 W. Ponce de Leon Ave, Decatur, Georgia 30030 or to the Georgia State University Foundation – Computer Science Enrichment Fund, P.O. Box 2668, Atlanta, Georgia 30301-2668.
