Marvin B. Carlson went to be with his Lord on Apri1 22, 2008, after complications from a fall.
He was born in Rockford, Illinois to the late Oscar and Esther Carlson on October 15, 1915. He graduated from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois in 1940 with a degree in business. He
went on to work for E. I. DuPont Company for 41 years as a sales and promotion manager in
their paint division in 17 southeastern states. Retiring in 1981, he and his wife made a number
of interesting trips. He proudly served his country as a Navy Photographer's Mate, 3rd class
aboard the air craft carrier USS Fanshaw Bay. He was engaged in battles on Okinawa in the
South Pacific. His brother, Howard was killed in that same battle. He was preceded in death by his sister, Judy and brother, Howard. He was married to Dorothy Burger in 1941, who died suddenly in 1946. He married Carol Carlson in 1948, who survives him. Their five children are: Richard (Sally) Carlson of Prior Lake, Minnesota, Bev (Ray) Munsterman of Lombard, Illinois, Barbara (David) Hayward of Suwanee, Georgia, James (Lisa) Carlson of Norcross, Georgia, and Merrilee Carlson of Norcross, Georgia. They have 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, cousins here and in Sweden, nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law Louise Burger of Circleville, Ohio and Belva Burger of Jennings, Louisiana; brother-in-law Richard (Marilyn) Carlson, sister-in-law Margaret (Robert) Fallt, sister-in-law Marilyn (Chris) Vatsaas, and brother-in-law Ralph (Marcia) Carlson, all of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Marvin was a tenor soloist who enjoyed choir, directing music, and singing solos in churches and on other occasions. One of his favorite songs was "The Longer I Serve Him, The Sweeter He Grows." He taught Sunday School, held many positions on church boards, worked with young people, Youth for Christ, and wherever there was a need. He was on the board and volunteered for 15 years with Norcross Cooperative Ministries for the needy. He made many friends at the Emory Rehabilitation Center, where he was called their star patient and endeared himself to his many therapists as he recovered from a stroke. He will be remembered as a man of integrity, faithful to his church, blessed with a good sense of humor and a hard work ethic, who was a friend to all. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, on Saturday from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. He will be interred at a private burial service. His life will be celebrated at a memorial service at First Alliance Church, 2512 North Druid Hills Road, NE, Atlanta, Georgia with Rev. Kevin Goins and Dr. Walter G. Sandell officiating, at 3:00 pm. Memorials may be given to Pioneer Clubs-Camp Scholarships, Box 788, Wheaton, IL 60189 or the Vehicle funds for missionaries Allan Ballard and Dan Holcomb, which may be sent to First Alliance Church.
