Mary Addilee (Lee) Isbell Wood was born on March 22, 1925 in Greens Creek, North Carolina and went to be with the Lord on July 29, 2019 at the age of 94. Lee grew up in Auburn, Alabama and it was there that she met Charlie Wood, a student at Auburn University. They got married on September 23, 1943 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma and celebrated almost 60 years of marriage before his death in 2003. They lived in Miami, Florida and Birmingham, Alabama before settling in Atlanta, Georgia in February 1960.
One of Lee’s great loves was her family. She poured her life into her two children, Carolyn and Danny, by providing delicious home-cooked meals, an immaculate house (never go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink!), and most importantly, time. She was always available to listen, to support, and to give “motherly” advice. She was the glue that held the family together.
This love of family extended over to her three grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. Each one of them brought immeasurable joy to “Nana”s” life and were a wonderful blessing.
Lee had the gift of hospitality and delighted in entertaining and having people in her home. She also enjoyed yard work and for many years was involved with the Briarpatch Garden Club. She loved to play bridge and go dancing with Charlie on the weekends.
As one who was always thinking young, her signature look was high heels. This fascination with high heels started early when she did some modeling (of shoes!) and continued until her 93rd birthday. It was at the age of 93 that she finally put the high heels aside once and for all but even then continued to look and act years younger than her age.
Lee loved her Savior Jesus Christ and the church. She was an active member of Briarlake Baptist Church for 59 years. She was committed to her Sunday School class, served as a greeter, and would be a threat to bring fresh flowers for decoration at any church event.
Lee Wood lived a full, blessed life and made life a little sweeter for all those whose lives intersected with hers. She will be missed but we rejoice that she is in heaven praising her Savior.
Lee was preceded in death by her father William Jesse Isbell, Sr. and her mother Frances Adeline McMahan Isbell; her husband Charles McDaniel Wood, Sr.; two brothers Sibert Belford Isbell and William Jesse Isbell, Jr and two sisters Nell Francis Isbell Capps and Jessie Bell Isbell Knowles. She is survived by her brother Roy Sherman Isbell, Sr.; daughter Carolyn Yelton and son Danny Wood; grandchildren Tricia Wilson, Kristin Wint and Lauren Wood and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2019, 11:00 am at Briarlake Baptist Church, Atlanta, Georgia. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. Following the service, Lee will be laid to rest at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Auburn, Alabama at 2:30 CDT.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Lee’s name to either Briarlake Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia or to Eagle Ranch in Flowery Branch, Georgia.
