Mary Alice Hewatt King died at home on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, two days shy of her 90th birthday. In a day when many did not graduate from high school, she was the valedictorian of her class. Her keen mind served her and her family well through the years, as a devoted wife of 64 years to Fred C. King, who preceded her in death, and as mother to her son F. Carlton King, Jr. Raised in Lawrenceville, she lived in the same house in Stone Mountain for virtually all of her married life. She was active and held leadership roles in the Stone Mountain First Baptist Church, and the Stone Mountain Women’s Club as long as her health and circumstances permitted. She was always involved in school related activities during her son’s student years, and after his birth, her only job outside the home was as receptionist and bookkeeper for Drs. McCurdy and Evans in Stone Mountain, to help pay for his college and law school education.
Mary Alice had a humble, gentle, considerate, and accepting spirit, and made friends easily, inspiring their love and devotion. But she was also a woman of strength and determination, and saw through to the finish anything she undertook. She influenced the world one person at a time, without ever realizing it. In addition to her son, she is survived by his wife, Joycelyn Fleming King, grandsons, Jason, Andrew and Benjamin King, and a number of nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stone Mountain First Baptist Church or Susan B. Komen for the Cure for Breast Cancer. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, 2773 N. Decatur Rd., Decatur. Funeral service Tuesday, 11:00 AM, Stone Mountain First Baptist Church, Mimosa Dr. at Ridge Ave., Stone Mountain. A. S. Turner & Sons
