Mary Anne Floyd Rawlinson passed away on January 9, 2013 at Emory University Hospital. She died of complications from a stroke. She was born on March 18, 1931 in Tallassee, Alabama, the daughter of the late T. Holmes and Irene Ingram Floyd. In high school she met the love of her life, William "Bill" E. Rawlinson, Jr. Mary Anne attended Stephens College for two years and then graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She then earned a Masters of Education degree at Columbia University while Bill completed his senior year at West Point. They married on June 10th, 1953 and Mary Anne embraced being an Army officer's wife. She had an outgoing personality and made new friends easily. She loved being a mother to their three children, Thomas, Jim and Julie. She was an unusually supportive person and always had a listening ear to her children, relatives and friends. On each military base, she was active in
social and church activities, often playing the piano since she was an accomplished pianist. Mary Anne loved to be with people and had a wonderful sense of humor. She maintained a very positive outlook on life even when she experienced multiple health challenges in her last few years. Until September 2012, Mary Anne and Bill lived in Opelika, Alabama where they had retired in 1984. Last fall they moved to Park Springs Retirement Community in Stone Mountain. Mary Anne is survived by her husband of 59 years, Col. William E. Rawlinson, Jr., her children W. Thomas Rawlinson, M.D. (Amy) of Cordova, TN, James Rawlinson of Blue Mounds, WI and Julie Barefoot (Tom) of Decatur, GA; and six grandchildren, Rachel and Jason Barefoot; Anne and Elise Rawlinson; and Eli and Hatheway Rawlinson as well as loving nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 19th at 11:00am in the Chapel of Decatur First United Methodist Church, 300 E. Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur, Georgia 30030. The family will have a private graveside service at The Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Emory University Hospital, 1762 Clifton Road NE, Suite 1400 Atlanta, GA 30032-4001.
