Mary Spencer Uhl died on Thursday, April 16, 2015. Born in Alachua, Florida on February 13, 1925, to Ernest and Lillian Spencer, she was the 3rd of 4 children. Her family includes her beloved husband of 67 years, Robert Irving Uhl, now of Atlanta and three daughters, Rev. Virginia (Rev. David) Tinsley of Young Harris, Helen (Dr. John) Simmons of Peachtree Corners, and Carolyn (Dr. Stephen) Knight of Atlanta. Grandchildren are Christa (Holden) Tinsley Spaht, Dr. Rob Simmons, Ben (Frances) Tinsley, Elizabeth (Rob) Simmons Sellers, Daniel Tinsley, and Kelsey Knight. Great grandchildren are Benjamin Tinsley and Mary Margaret Sellers.
She is survived by a sister, Esther Whetstone of St, Augustine, FL and is predeceased by a sister, Lillian and a brother, Ernest.
Mary graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon and moved to Atlanta to teach school. She met Bob at the Young Adult group at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church. Besides her devotion to her family, Mary was a lifelong church organist and pianist, first in her home church of Alachua Methodist Church, then in Langdale (AL) Methodist Church, West Point (GA) First United Methodist Church. The United Methodist Church was a way of life and a focus of energy for Mary and Bob. She taught private piano lessons most of her adult life and taught music in the West Point Public Schools.
Bob and Mary moved from West Point to Atlanta to Clairmont Place 12 years ago and most recently to The Mann House in Sandy Springs. The family is indebted to all the caregivers for Mary and Bob in recent years.
After moving to Atlanta, Mary and Bob were active in Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church where the service will be held on Saturday, April 18 at 2 pm with reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to West Point United Methodist Church, Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, or the charity of your choice.
