Mary Evelyn Helms

Mary Evelyn Owens Helms, 93, of Tucker, Ga and formerly of Lithonia, GA passed away on December 28, 2015. She was born on May 3, 1922 in East Atlanta, GA to Oscar Perry Owens, Sr. and Mattie Pearl Edwards Owens. She was the last of her generation, preceeded in death by her parents, her brother Oscar, and sisters Marjorie and Doris.

The love of her life, Raleigh Lawson Helms, Jr. was her high school sweetheart and they were blessed with 51 years of marriage before his death in 1992. They had three children, David (Theresa) Helms, Carolyn Helms, and Pam (Carl) Higginbotham. She had 5 grandchildren, Sharon Whitnall (Chuck), Jeff Helms (Cindy), Amy Rosen (Glen), Spence Sealock and Lauren Frost which in turn produced 12 great grandchildren, Andrew, Julia, Dakota, Mackenzie, Zoey, Colton, Abby, Jordan, Madison, Gavin, Aedyn and Ella. She also leaves many nieces and nephews to mourn her passing.

Special thanks goes to the staff of Atria Park of Tucker where she has been a resident for the past 8 years. Their love and support has greatly been appreciated by Mary's children and family.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on December 31, 2015 at A.S. Turner funeral home on 2773 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, GA and visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., the time of service. Interment will be at the Decatur Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved Lawson.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to PAWS Atlanta or Longleaf Hospice.
