Mary G. Morland, age 88, died peacefully at Embracing Hospice in Snellville, GA, on November 14, 2007. Born September 30, 1919 in Birmingham, AL, Mary was the youngest of three children born to Marvin E. Morland, M.D. and Nina Browne. Mary's brother William and sister Helen preceded her in death. She is survived by a nephew William B. Morland of Laguna Niguel, CA and a niece Ruth Jones of Austin, TX. Other survivors include several great nieces and nephews: Kimberly Morland, Ph.D., Brooklyn, NY, Mary Kelly Wight of Phoenix, AZ, Doug Morland of Lake Forest, CA, Beth Sims and Trey Sims of Sharpsburg, GA, Christopher Jones of New Orleans, LA, Roger Jones of Key West, FL, Curtis Jones of Abilene, TX and Jennifer Jones of Austin Texas. She is also survived by her beloved friend of 44 years, Glenda Cowart. Mary attended the University of Alabama and then went on to work for a prestigious Birmingham law firm. Mary served her country in the U.S. Navy for 4 years, from 1944 to 1948, where she ultimately achieved the rank of Chief Petty officer. She then returned to the law firm in Birmingham to work for several years. In 1950, Mary moved to Atlanta, where she became the secretary to the Chairman of the Board of Fulton Bag, Norman Elsas, and continued working with him when he operated his own engineering firm. In 1963, Mary went to work at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from which she retired in 1986. Mary was greatly loved by many for her wonderful upbeat personality and her true caring for and interest in people. She also had a great love for animals and was a generous contributor to many animal rescue and protection organizations, as well as numerous other charities. She was a loyal member of Holy Trinity Parish where she served on the Altar Guild for 25 years and for many years volunteered one day a week to serve as the church receptionist. For the last three years, Mary resided at Park Springs, a continuing care retirement community, where she made many warm friendships. Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 18, 2007 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 515 East Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur, GA 30030. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holy Trinity or to PAWS Atlanta, 5287 Covington Hwy., Decatur, GA 30035. A. S. Turner & Sons
