Mary George Gavalas

January 21, 1913 — January 17, 2014

The everlasting soul of Mary George Gavalas passed from this world on Tuesday, January 17, in Atlanta, Georgia at the age of 100. Mary Gavalas was the first of six children of Greek immigrants, Angeliki Leia Calamus and George Gavalas born on January 21, 1913 in Augusta, GA. From her earliest days, her life centered around the Church and like her father, she had a strong work ethic. Mary followed her Mother's example and participated as a choir member in the Orthodox Church virtually her entire adult life. Mary was active in many Hellenic and Orthodox organizations and served as the first President of the Atlanta Chapter of the Daughters of Penelope. As a young woman she worked with her husband John Chotas, to open and manage several restaurants and nightclubs in downtown Atlanta. Mary followed her parent's example as a loving and attentive Mother to her only daughter Angela, by giving her a firm foundation in music, church life and Hellenic culture. People who had the good fortune to know her will eternally remember Mary for her grace, kind heart, giving spirit and loving smile. She is survived by her son-in-law Romilos Ioannides; grandchildren Aristides and John Ioannides; great-grandchildren Maria, Katerina, Alexia and Nicholas Ioannides. May Her Memory be Eternal + Services will be held 1:00 P.M. Tuesday Jan. 21, in The Greek Cathedral of the Annunciation. Visitation will be Monday Jan. 20, 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at A.S.
