Mary Josephine ("Mary Jo") Smith Barnes, 93, formerly of Decatur, Georgia died in Rock Hill, South Carolina on September 15, 2009. She was the widow of Joshua Chester Barnes. Born on December 7, 1915 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of the late George Arthur and Ella Siler Smith. She was predeceased by her brother, George Siler Smith. She is survived by two daughters, Judith Barnes Crozier of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Martha Barnes Whitney of Spartanburg, South Carolina; four granddaughters, Josephine Crozier Kendall, Ellen Crozier Kiehn, Emily Tinsley Whitney, and Louisa Stanfill Whitney; and three great-grandchildren, Catherine DeVane Kendall, Elizabeth Benson Kiehn, and John David Siler Kiehn. She was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church and the Castalian Literary Club in Rock Hill. While living in Decatur, she was a member of Decatur First United Methodist Church, where she served as President of the United Methodist Women, taught Sunday school, and was active in the Paty Class. Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 19 at 11 a.m. in Decatur Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of Decatur First United Methodist Church following the service.
