Mary Lamb Heaton

May 4, 1922 — October 21, 2014

Mary Frances Lamb Heaton of Tucker was born May 4, 1922, in Atlanta, Georgia, the only daughter of Hattie Wilson and Thomas Jackson Lamb. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Heaton, Sr., a member of the Greatest Generation. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Heaton Hall, and a great-grandchild, McKenzie Hall. She had four brothers who all predeceased her: Woodrow, W. Jack, Charles, and Forest. The family lived in Tallahassee, Atlanta, Tokyo, Albuquerque, Orlando, East Point, and Tucker. She died in Atlanta on October 21, 2014. Mary went to Fulton High School and the Atlanta Extension Unit of the University of Georgia before beginning her career as an Army wife and mother. During the many changes in duty stations, she helped support the family with employment as a department store buyer, portrait photographer, and as an employee of the Georgia Public Service Commission, from which she retired after some 36 years of service. Mary enjoyed nothing more than doing things for other people, particularly preparing for annual holiday celebration get-togethers like Thanksgiving and Christmas for her extended family, and their birthdays. She loved gardens and always had plants and flowers in her home and yard. In her final years her attention was devoted to acting as the primary caregiver to her daughter in her declining health, and then to debilitating limitations of her own. She accepted Jesus as her Savior while a child at Ben Hill Methodist Church, and was until health issues arose, a long-time member of the Rehoboth Baptist Church choir in Tucker. Mary loved to travel. Besides the places she was able to see in the family's Army relocations, she loved the beach and other travel. She was able to enjoy a trip to the Holy Land and to Alaska's interior. She is survived by her son, Tom Heaton, Jr., her grandchildren Kim Goodson, Tommy Heaton, III, Jennifer Heaton, Sherri DiCapria, David Hall, and twelve great-grandchildren: Joshua and Justin, Jordan and Joel, Tucker and Annie, Olivia, and Adam, Katie, and Jackson, Mary Beth and Madison Hall; and her special friend and caregiver George Salas. Services will be held Thursday, October 23, 2014, at ll AM, in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons, with burial to follow at the Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery in Hartwell, Georgia. Family will receive friends Wednesday, October 22d, from 3-5 PM and 7-9 PM. A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
