Mary Lula Powell

Mary Lula Holroyd Powell, age 98 of Decatur died November 30, 2014. She was born in Anderson, SC on July 30, 1916. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Alva Ray Powell, Sr., her parents Robert Emory, Sr. and Mary Cureton Holroyd, sister Martha Louise Ellison, and 2 brothers, Robert Emory, Jr, and William Thomas Holroyd. She is survived by her children, Mary P. Luther of Mt. Pleasant, NC, Martha P. Smith and Monte of Decatur, GA and Alva Ray Powell, Jr. and Sandra of Greensboro, NC; sibling, Robert Francis Holroyd of Anderson, SC, 5 grandchildren, Joe Luther, III and wife Elizabeth, Matthew Smith and wife Amy Lynn, Michael Luther and wife Ana, Al Powell, III and wife Leighann, Will Powell and wife Jesse, and 10 great grandchildren, Haley, Eli, Dorian, Justin, Ashton, Will, Jr., Elijah Ray, Nathan, Ian, and Chandler, great-great-grandchild Breyden. Mary loved the United Methodist Church of which she was a lifelong and active member. She moved to King's Bridge Atlanta from Greensboro, NC where she lived for 40 years. At King's Bridge she was involved in the writing club, exercise group, coordinated the Welcome Table, and served on the council. Mary was a lifelong volunteer, walker, gardener and participated in community and church choirs. Her family was extremely important to Mary and she especially loved the yearly trips to Litchfield Beach, SC. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church. Services will be held at Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church on East Rock Springs Road, Atlanta on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at 2:00 pm with the family receiving guest in the church parlor after her services. Interment will be at Green Hill Cemetery, Greensboro, NC on Sunday, December 7, 2014, at 3:00 pm.
