Mary Johnson, age 100, died at Elmcroft Assisted Living in Marietta, Georgia on Tuesday March 13, 2018.
Born December 13, 1917 in Eldon, Missouri, Mary Margaret Robertson was one of seven siblings and grew up in Kansas City, Kansas. She worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Manhattan, Kansas, and met her future husband, Howard Johnson, who was a student at Kansas State University. During the Second World War, Howard was a pilot in the Army Air Corps stationed in Pecos, Texas, and they married there on June 11, 1943. Then 1957 brought a relocation to Atlanta, Georgia, which they considered good fortune as they immediately fell in love with the area and their neighbors, raised two children, and lived happily in the same home for nearly 60 years.
Among Mary’s many interests were playing bridge with friends, browsing for treasures every month at the historic Lakewood Antiques Market, traveling in the U. S. and abroad with her husband, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was an avid fan of sports and old movies, and had a remarkable memory and sharp wit throughout her life.
Mary Johnson was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a dear friend to many. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her children, Bruce Johnson and Diane Stubblebine; two grandchildren, Ami Pitts Stephens and Carl Pitts; and three great-grandchildren, Will, Taylor, and Wynn Stephens.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to The Salvation Army, 202 Waterman Street, S.E., Marietta, GA 30060 or online at https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/ways-to-give/.
