Mary “Mem” Powell Luther, age 75, of Decatur, died May 25, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was born in Spartanburg, SC on November 7th, 1941.
Mary graduated from North Fulton High School in Atlanta and Greensboro College in Greensboro, NC with a B.A. in religion. She attended Emory University’s Candler School of Theology where she met her husband, Joe. She worked for many years as an Administrative Assistant at the Coltrane L.I.F.E. Center in Concord, NC.
Mary was a member of Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church in Atlanta since 2015. Before then, she was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Concord, NC for over 40 years. She was an active member. She sang in the choir and played hand bells, was President of the United Methodist Women, held multiple offices at Central UMC and in the Western North Carolina conference of the United Methodist Church. She also volunteered for meals on wheels and was a member of the Visitation Team at Haygood UMC. She loved spending time with her family. Her favorite place was Litchfield Beach, South Carolina where the family vacationed for many years.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 46 years, Joe Edward Luther, Jr., her parents, Alva Ray Powell, Sr. and Mary Holroyd Powell.
She is survived by her sons, Joe Edward Luther, III and wife Elizabeth of Marietta, GA, and Michael Emory Luther and wife Ana of Marietta, GA; identical twin sister Martha Powell Smith and husband Monte of Decatur, GA and Al Powell, Jr. and wife Sandra of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren Haley, Elijah, Chandler and husband Kevin, and Ian; and two great grandchildren, Breyden and Ben.
A memorial will be held on Thursday, June 1st at 2pm at Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church in Atlanta. A graveside interment service will follow on Saturday, June 3rd at 11:00am at Oak Grove Church in Denton, NC.
