Mary Rose Young Daniel was born November 28,1923 in St. Paul Minnesota to Edward J. Young and Alice Berry Young. Mary Rose was the eldest of four children. Her siblings are Joan Jansen born in 1925, James A. (Chic) Young born in 1929 and Rev. John E. Young born in 1932. Most of Mary’s childhood was spent in St.Paul. With her father being a traveling salesman, the family moved around the Upper Midwest several times. Watertown South Dakota, Elmhurst, Illinois and Jackson, Michigan were also home to the Young family.
Due to the outbreak of WWII, Mary joined the US Navy with parental permission, as she was not yet 21 years of age.
During the war, Mary went through boot camp in New York and then served at Parris Island as a lab tech in the Navy hospital corps.
After WWII she went to Chicago to attend the college of St. Francis. Mary lived with her sister Joan across from the water tower in Chicago.
With the outbreak of the Korean War, Mary reenlisted in the Navy and was sent to the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida where she attained the rank of Pharmacist mate first class.
While there, Mary met and married Robert Knox Daniel Jr. on February 14, 1953. This is how a nice Catholic girl from the Upper Midwest ended up in Atlanta, Georgia with a Southern boy who was raised in many different churches.
In 1953, Mary and Robert moved to Atlanta and started attending St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Soon thereafter, a baby daughter arrived, Barbara Ann, in 1953 and shortly after a baby boy, Robert Knox III, followed by David in 1958, Deborah in 1960, Theresa in 1961 and then Edward in 1966.
Mary and Robert lived in Atlanta and raised their family with all of the joys and heartbreak that any family may have. Mary worked at Dekalb Hospital and retired after many years of service as a unit clerk. Even after her retirement, she continued to work at the hospital as a volunteer. Mary enjoyed going to the pool on a regular basis for water aerobics and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her daughter Theresa in 1962, her son Robert III in 2009, her husband Robert Jr. in 2006, and her brother James A. Young in 1999.
Mary’s surviving family and friends will always remember her loving and kind spirit and her devotion to the Catholic church. Mary will be missed by all who knew her.
Mary is survived by her children Barbara Whitley and husband Joe, David Daniel, Deborah Daniel and Edward Daniel and wife Michele, her granddaughters Jennifer Maze Russell and husband Adam, Andrea Lyons and husband Matthew, Rebecca Riveros and husband Andrew and Jessica Daniel, and her great grandchildren Bella and Aidan Russell and Jacob and Jordan Lyons.
The family would like to thank all who expressed their sympathy through calls, cards, texts, social media posts in this difficult time.
