Mary was blinded at an early age and attended the Illinois School for the Blind.
She completed her academic work, also learning how to succeed at all the tasks necessary to live independently. She married David Rutledge, a student at the School for the Blind. Together they owned and operated a Schwinn bicycle shop, selling and repairing bicycles.
She moved to Georgia from Arizona following the death of her husband to be near her sister, Barbara Tuttle and her niece, Connie. She lived the final years of her life at Grace Healthcare of Tucker.
