Mary Erwin Wood died on February 12, 2021. She was born April 19, 1923 in Hendersonville, NC to Mary Erwin and Alexander Hamilton Wood. Mary was a proud graduate of Fassifern School for Girls and Furman University, where she majored in French and minored in Spanish, German, and political science. Ms. Wood's career was with the City of Atlanta, where she was awarded Secretary of the Year by Mayor Andrew Young in 1987. She was a proud lifelong Methodist, including Hendersonville Methodist Church (NC), Buncombe Street Methodist Church (SC), and Glenn Memorial UMC. She loved singing in the choir at all three churches, beloved pet cats, her UMW Circle, and enjoyed daily meals from Piccadilly Cafeteria for many years. Mary shared loved generously- offering bags of mints and tissues to all of her visitors and telling each one she loved you, "a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck." She was surrounded by loving neighbors and caregivers at Emory Woods Apartments, Azalea House, and OrionStar Home, as well as the faithful care of "Team Mary": Laird Prussner, Cheryl Khoja, Ellen Lynn, Francine Greiner, Luther Lewis, Susan Pinson, and her firefighter hero, Tad Landau. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, a beloved brother, cousins, and friends, including Jenny Rebecca Patterson and Jean and Bob Gerwig. She is survived by cousins Gladys Weddle, Virginia Erwin, and Bee Hubbard. Memorial gifts may be made to Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life will be planned near her 98th birthday in April 2021.
