Maxie Derrell Hasty

July 7, 1942 — August 16, 2016

Maxie Derrell Hasty, 74, a longtime resident of Smoke Rise, GA, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on August 16, 2016. He was born July 7, 1942, in Worth County, GA. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 53 years, Doris Towson Hasty; children, Greg Hasty (Kim) and Donna Rae Woods (Steve); grandchildren, Sayler Hammer (Brandon), Dallas Hasty, Remington Hasty, Katelyn Capers (Taylor), and Austin Woods; bonus grandchildren, Cari and Nick Smith; brothers, Donnie Hasty of Tifton and Gene Hasty of Sylvester; sisters, Bobbie Summers of Chula, Mary Jo Gibbs of Ty Ty, and Barbara Brannen of Monticello, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Hasty and mother, Veryln Hasty and a brother, Gerald Hasty. Mr. Hasty was a graduate of Irwin County High School where he was a member of the Beta Club. He received an academic scholarship to Valdosta State University where he studied Biology and was on the Dean's list while working two jobs, and also majored in engineering at Georgia Tech and Southern Polytechnic University. He was the president and owner of Landman, Incorporated, where he worked for over 40 years. Although his cancer prognosis was dire, he battled the disease, surviving over eleven years beyond the experts' predictions. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who was passionate about antique cars, golf, trips to "Honeywood," his lake house on Lake Blackshear, excursions to his condo on Anastasia Island, and spending time at home with his extended family. He loved dancing with his high school sweetheart Doris. They were the first ones on the dance floor and the last ones to leave! He had an incredible sense of humor, a tender heart, and an appreciation for life and will be greatly missed by those who loved him. Visitation will begin at 1 pm on Saturday, August 20 at Lawrenceville Road United Methodist Church, 3142 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker, GA, with the funeral, officiated by Reverend Dr. John Huggins, at 2 pm.
