Mayes G. Howard, 82, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 in Brandon, Florida. Mayes resided in Valrico, Florida. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Julie P. Howard, two sons, Glenn Howard of Miami Lakes, Florida and Scott Howard of Watkinsville, Georgia and their spouses. Other family members include four grandchildren, Hayley, Courtney, Quinn, and Tate Howard; two sisters, Dot Wheeler of Norcross, Georgia and Barbara Cozart of Tyrone, Georgia and their spouses; one brother, Dick Howard, of Stockbridge, Georgia and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his only daughter, Holly L. Howard. Mayes was born in Blue Ridge, Georgia, January 19, 1933 and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. After marriage, Mayes, his wife and children lived in Decatur, Georgia; Nashville, Tennessee; Lilburn, Georgia; Miami, Florida; and Valrico, Florida. Mayes worked as a meat broker for Swift Company and was later self-employed with Peninsula Meat Company. Mayes loved college football and was an avid supporter of the Georgia Bulldogs and Georgia Tech.Visitation will be held Saturday, June 6 at 10 AM with services at 11 AM in the chapel at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Services will be performed by Scott Harp. A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
