Melba Williams Prater, 80, of Loganville, died July 24, 2011. She was a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and was a graduate of Central High School. Immediately after graduation, Melba began a long career with Southern Bell. After a courtship of four years, she married in 1951 her high school sweetheart, Jack Prater. With the phone company she quickly rose through the ranks, moved to Atlanta and became part of the management team, where she dedicated much of her time training employees on a new machine called the computer. Mrs. Prater retired from Southern Bell after 25 years of service. She was preceded in death by her son, Mark Prater, and is survived by her husband of 59 years, Jack R. Prater; daughters, Jean Henderson, Angie Fawaz and Jane Haislip; 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; sisters, Hope Bible and Mickey Smith. The funeral service will be held 1 PM, Thursday, July 28, in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons with Pastor Steve Owens officiating. The family will receive friends 5-8 Wednesday evening at A. S. Turner & Sons.
