Mellany Carol Blount, 71 of Atlanta (originally of Blackshear) died Tuesday, April 23 at Heritage Hospice after an extended illness. She was born July 13, 1952 in Waycross (Ware County) Georgia to the late Horace Winton and Elizabeth (Betty) Carol Blount. Mellany's grandparents were William Benard Walker and Ola Maude Dixon Walker of Blackshear and Charlie Bryant Blount Sr and Lila Mae Couch Blount of Blackshear. Mellany attended St. Joseph's Academy in Waycross through the 8th grade and Blackshear High School. Afterwards, Mellany participated in several programs for adults with developmental disabilities in Ware County.
Mellany's father, Horace, said Mellany was "his right hand" when she helped take care of her mother in her elder years. Mellany lived in Blackshear Georgia with her parents until 2012 when she moved to Atlanta. She attended the day program at the Frazer Center and then the JF&CS Independence Works Program in Atlanta. From 2014, she lived with 3 wonderful roommates in a residential care program and became more independent and more involved in the lives of others, her roommates, their families and the support staff. Mellany loved her family and friends, was a huge fan of Coca-Cola and sweets, had a funny, sharp sense of humor, and a keen ability to simultaneously monitor multiple activities and conversations!
Mellany is survived by her sister, Joy Elaine Blount of Atlanta and Sharon Day of Atlanta, her aunt Mary Jewnell (Jan) Eichelberger of Atlanta, William B. "Junior" Walker Jr, Doris Blount of Waycross, Velma Sue Crawford Walker of Tennessee and numerous cousins who are the children of Robert Walker and his wife Sue, Jan Eichelberger and her husband James, Charles B. Blount, Jr. and his wife Athleen, John T. Blount, Clarence D. Blount and his wife Augusta, and Leon Blount and his wife Doris and well as other Blount, Couch, Dixon, Proctor, and Walker relatives.
A beautiful celebration of life memorial was held at the JF&CS Independence Works Program on May 9th in Atlanta where Mellany's day program friends, support staff, her roommates and their families participated.
Mellany's burial will be at Ben James Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Pierce County Georgia on June 19, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. with a graveside memorial for family and friends.
