Melnora "Mellie" Jane Gordon

Melnora Gordon passed away suddenly, but peacefully, on May 13, 2013. Mellie was born on December 12, 1940 to Melvin and Lenora Gordon in Atlanta, Georgia. She is survived by her son, Buz, daughter, KT, granddaughter Audrey, brothers Melvin and Jeff, niece Nicole, and nephew Michael. Mellie had a lifelong passion for music, especially the piano. She studied piano with Daisy Luckey at Druid Hills High School and, following her graduation in 1958, continued her musical studies at Ohio Wesleyan and Emory Universities. She was forced to suspend those studies in the early sixties when she relocated to Rochester, New York, to raise a family. In the seventies, she obtained a bachelors degree in social work and, for many years thereafter, helped counsel and care for those in the community less fortunate than herself. In the late eighties, Mellie returned to Atlanta where, soon after, she began teaching piano to children and, during the ensuing two decades, it remained her greatest joy to share the wonders of music with her many students. Mellie was devoted to God and never tired of exploring the mysteries of her religion. She also had a thirst for learning about many other subjects and was extremely well read. Mellie will be forever missed by her loved ones and many friends with whom she shared her fascination for life's gifts and the world around her. There will be a celebration of Mellie's life, presided over by her very dear friend, Chaplain Gayle Roberts, at A.S. Turner and Sons, 2773 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, GA 30033, on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m., with a reception and refreshments to follow.
