Michael Benjiman Shumate

Michael Benjamin Shumate, known to family and friends as Mike or Michael "B" passed away June 7, 2013 after a courageous battle with lymphoma. Mike was 58 years old, a loving husband to Julia Meche Shumate for 21 years and a 32 year employee of the Hyatt in Atlanta, Georgia. Mike was born in Anchorage, Alaska on July 13, 1955 to his parents, Donald Bejamin Shumate, Jr. and Patricia Etcher (deceased). He was raised in Jacksonville, NC and graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1973. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy and served for four years. He then began a career with the Hyatt Regency, Atlanta. He is survived by his wife Julia, of Atlanta, parents Ben and Rita Shumate of Wilmington, brother Sonny Shumate of Jacksonville, sister Emily Shumate of Wilmington and step-siblings Tresa Bedson, and Mike and Mark Marquez. He also leaves behind many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces nephews, grand nieces and nephews and all the employees of the Hyatt. His wife was born in Peru and he was cherished by his extended Peruvian family. Mike was an extraordinary person and will be missed by all that knew and loved him
