Michael George Creety, Jr.

Michael George Creety, Jr. was born on April 8, 1964, and passed away on April 28, 2020. He is survived by his loving, devoted mother, Anastasia (Tassie) Poulos Truman, his sister, Ariadne Adriane Creety, his aunts Themis (Cissy) Poulos Lamas, and Sophia Poulos Staros, his uncle Stavros Andris, his maternal great aunt, Ida Janoulis Lingos, and several cousins. He is predeceased by his father, Michael George Creety, his stepfather, Lt. General Louis W. Truman, his maternal grandfather Nick John Poulos, his maternal grandmother Helen Janoulis Poulos, his aunt, Betty Poulos Andris, his uncle Theodore A. Lamas, his uncle, Lt. Colonel Edward J. Staros, and his Godfather, Dr. Nick Takakis. Michael was a loving and devoted son, stepson, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend. Michael was a lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation, Atlanta, Georgia, and loved God, and lived an exemplary Christian life, which he expressed in his every endeavor in helping others.
Michael was a graduate of DeKalb Christian Academy, he graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in Political Science and a minor in English on August 24, 1986, and he was admitted to the degree of Juris Doctor by Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia on May 27, 1990. Michael was fluent in the Greek language, and was an accomplished pianist, studying under Betty Folger since the age of three.
Michael was appointed Second Lieutenant, Armor, United States Army Reserve in the United States Army on June 14, 1985. He was awarded a diploma from the United States Army Infantry School for successful completion of the Airborne Course at Ft. Benning, Georgia on August 23, 1984. He was awarded a certificate of recognition for his service during the period of the Cold War (2 September 1945 – 26 December 1991) in promoting peace and stability, signed by former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army as a First Lieutenant, Infantry, on November 21, 1989.
Special recognition and appreciation go to Roy Ioannides and his wife, Angela, our longtime Church organist, lifelong members of our Church, and longtime family friends and neighbors who watched Michael grow up. Roy is a high school Math teacher, and he tutored Michael every afternoon for months to help Michael get therapy for significant short term and long-term memory loss due to a devastating, traumatic brain injury he sustained in 1989. Roy knew how hard Michael had worked to achieve what he had accomplished, and he wanted to help him regain his memory and Math skills. It was very much appreciated by Michael and his mother, and was a great help and not to be forgotten.
Also, special recognition goes to H.A. Stephens, Jr., who predeceased Michael, who was a mentor to Michael, and who was the inspiration for him to become a lawyer.

Michael was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia on October 30, 1992, and practiced law in Georgia as a sole practitioner for twenty-eight years. He was, on motion first made in this behalf by Hosea Alexander Stephens, admitted and qualified as an Attorney and Counselor in the Supreme Court of the United States of America on November 27, 1995. He was admitted and qualified to practice as an Attorney in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia on November 16, 1992. He was appointed and qualified to practice as an Attorney for the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan on September 2, 1994. He was admitted as an Attorney and Counselor for the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on May 31, 1994. He was admitted as an Attorney and Counselor to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit on November 17, 1992. He was admitted and licensed to practice as Attorney and Counselor-at-Law in the United States Court of International Trade on May 13, 1994. He was admitted to plead and practice in the Supreme Court of the State of Georgia on November 9, 1992. He was qualified and admitted as an Attorney and Counsellor of the Bar of the United States Court of Veterans Appeals on August 9, 1993. He was admitted to plead and practice in the Court of Appeals of the State of Georgia on November 4, 1992. He was elected as a Regular Member of the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers on April 23, 1994. Additionally, Michael held a Georgia Real Estate License and a Georgia Broker’s License. Michael became a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason on May 2, 1987. Michael lived a life full of love and service to other people, and he will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know him.
The funeral will be held on May 4, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, Decatur, Georgia, with interment immediately following at Greenwood Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation, Atlanta, Georgia.
