Michael George Vasilos

November 21, 1921 — April 5, 2008

Michael George Vasilos, age 86, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2008, at his home in Atlanta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mercedes Vasilos, his sister, Penelope Pappas, and his brother, Peter Vasilos. Born in New York City, he was raised in Astoria, NY. He graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Electrical Engineering, taking additional coursework at Columbia University. A World War II veteran, Mike served as a Staff Sergeant in the 88th Infantry Division Signal Corps in Italy, North Africa, and the Philippines and was a part of the occupation forces stationed in Hiroshima, Japan. He worked for Western Electric as a Supervising Engineer for forty years, first in New York and then in Atlanta when he was transferred in 1962, retiring in 1982. Mike was a gentle man whose heart was filled with love for his family and his church. An active member of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation, Mike served as Secretary of the Parish Council and Sunday School Father-on-Duty, and worked many hours on the Maintenance Committee, the Church Mail Committee and at the Atlanta Greek Festival. He was awarded the St. Paul's Medal and was an Archangel Michael Honoree. A Life Member of AHEPA, he was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers and was involved in numerous community service activities. Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Mercedes and Jerry Paxton of Grayson, daughter and son-in-law, Mary Alice and Les George of Marietta, son and daughter-in-law, George and Pamela Vasilos of Charleston, SC; brother, Dr. Thomas Vasilos of Naples, FL; brother-in-law John Parasho of Anderson, SC, brother-in-law; Constantine Pappas of Sanibel, FL; grandchildren, Nicole and Michael Paxton, Evangeline and Pete George, Sophia, Georgianna, and Michael Vasilos; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation, 2500 Clairmont Road, Atlanta, GA 30329 at 11:00 am Tuesday, April 8, 2008 and interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Monday, April 7, at A.S. Turner and Sons, 2773 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, GA (404-292-1551) and invites them to attend a prayer service at the Chapel at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation Endowment Fund. A. S. Turner & Sons
