Mildred Bergstrom Russell Trott, a native Atlantan, died Sunday, September 11, 2016. She was the daughter of the late Russell Bergstrom (known as Mam Mam) and O.M. Bergstrom. She lived in Atlanta and Decatur her whole life and most recently was a member of the Clairmont Place community.
Mildred graduated from Girls High in Atlanta. She remained friends with her classmates from Girls High, Bass Junior High, and Moreland Elementary School throughout her life. Wherever she would go in Atlanta and Decatur, she would be reunited with former classmates and friends. She was a member of North Decatur United Methodist Church for over 50 years, and attended Decatur First Christian Church for 10 years. She was active in circles at both churches for many years and had friends from both churches.
Mildred enjoyed an active and full life. She loved dancing, particularly square dancing, and playing cards, especially bridge. She traveled with family and friends around the world, enjoying many cruise and tours. Hawaii was her favorite destination and she visited numerous times. She and her late husband, Ed, spent many years visiting their lake home, sharing wonderful times with family and friends. Mildred was a member of various clubs and participated in learning opportunities throughout her life. Some of those activities included NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees), Lifelong Learning classes at Emory, and business education classes.
Mildred retired from IRS after a career of 26 years. After retiring she enjoyed working at various part-time jobs with groups of friends. One of her favorite jobs was as a volunteer at the 1996 Olympics.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Edward Joseph Russell. Her mother, father, and brother, Andrew Bergstrom, predeceased her. Her two daughters and son-in-law, Linda Russell Middlebrooks, Jack Middlebrooks, and Mary Russell Masterson, survive her. Other survivors include her grandchildren and their spouses Jack Brooks, Kate Middlebrooks Jarvis and Chase, Sherry Masterson Shellman and Steve, and Russell Masterson and Kristy. Mildred was blessed with six great grandchildren, to whom she was known as "Granny", including Ryder Brooks, Emma Shellman, Alyssa Shellman, Izzie Masterson, Greta Mae Masterson, and Josie Masterson. Her three nieces and nephew Mary Stewart (Tewy) Bergstrom, Blair Bergstrom, and Andrew (Bud) Bergstrom, Jr. survive her.
A celebration of her life will be held at Turner's funeral home at 2773 North Decatur Road, Decatur, Georgia. Visitation will be on Friday, September 16 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be Saturday, September 17 at 10:00 a.m. A private graveside service at Crest Lawn Memorial Park will follow from family.
