Mildred Hopkins Mainor, a lifelong resident of Tucker, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, November 10th at the age of 91. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Harry Mainor.
She is survived by her two sons, David (Kay) and Charlie (Sandra) and grandchildren Amanda, Russ (Alexa), Blake, Brian (Melanie), Kelly, Drew, and Sandra’s sons P.J. (Kiernan) and Andrew Klein, great grandchild Daxton, sister Jeannette Medlin (Dillard) and sister-in-law Jo Hopkins, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be Sunday, November 15th from 12:00 – 2:00pm at A.S. Turner Funeral Home and the service will be in their Chapel immediately following. Rev. Larry Burgess officiating.
Mildred was a retired musician. She was a piano student of Veatrice Carroll, an organ student
of Emilie Parmalee Spivey and majored in voice while a student at Mercer University/Atlanta, Olga Loveland, teacher. She graduated cum laude from MUA in 1974 and is included in the 1973-74 edition of Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges.
Her career in music included private teaching where, as all her students will attest, she would always say, “now count!” while patiently teaching them to play the piano or organ. She also served as an Organist/Choir Director in churches leading and teaching a wide range of people from pre-school age choirs to adult sanctuary choirs. In her retirement, she also continued to share her musical gifts and was the organist at the Turner Funeral Home in Decatur for 15 years.
Also, for the record, one instrument she could not master, but was required to try in college, was the violin. Her sons still recall the “sawing” noises she created when practicing! In addition to music, her other passions were travel, genealogy, and support for mission work. Mildred and her late husband traveled the world from San Francisco to New York, from Puerto Rico to Spain and many other interesting sites on his annual sales convention trips.
She also supported missions’ projects around the world from places as varied as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Tiemala, Mali and was a prayer warrior for many missionaries. And, in her spare time, she enjoyed visiting many relatives to compile a genealogy of the Hopkins and Mainor families that date back to the 1700’s.
One other thing that Mildred, or Mimi, was known for was her scripting of annual Christmas plays following Christmas dinner. Over time, every grandchild, whether they wanted to or not, had a “starring role” in one of these plays but it always meant a lot to Mimi.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any gifts be made to Sacred Journey Hospice Care.
