Mildred Jackson Speights

August 24, 1913 — March 13, 2018

Mildred Jackson Speights died on March 13, 2018 at 104 years old. She was born in Atlanta, GA and married in Decatur, GA to Robert Milton Speights. She held graduate degrees from Oglethorpe University, Emory University, University of Georgia and Georgia State University. She was a teacher in Decatur Schools, Gainesville Schools, taught English at Gainesville College, Assistant Professor of Education and Psychology at Limestone College, taught Education at Brenau University, and was principal of Northwood School in South Carolina.
As a writer, she was widely published in the DELTA KAPPA GAMMA BULLETIN and was published in many other magazines and newspapers. At the First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville, she was Clerk of Session, President of the Women of the Church, and founding member of the beloved Primetime Singers. For nine years, she was a Community Columnist of the Gainesville Times. She is survived by her son, Dr. Robert M. Speights, Jr., of Fort Collins, CO and daughter, Dr. Peggy Ogden of Dunwoody, GA and four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Grandchildren are William Speights of Discovery Bay, CA, David Speights of Fort Collins, CO, Dr. Michael Ogden of High Point, NC, and Dr. Carol Anne Ogden-Schullery of Lake Forest Park, WA. Services will be held on Tuesday, March 20th at 1:00 PM in the Lakeview Room at Presbyterian Village in Austell, GA.
