Mildred Sims Thurman, 92, died July 19, 2011, at Morningside of Gainesville Assisted Living. She was born May 4, 1919, to Vashti George and John A. Sims of Stockbridge, GA. She is preceeded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, J. Worth Thurman. Mildred was a long time member of Decatur First United Methodist Church and the Paty Sunday School Class where she was affectionately known as the "Hat Lady." She worked in the Men's Department at Rich's for 27 years. She lived in Stone Mountain and Decatur before moving to Gainesville in 2000. Mrs. Thurman is survived by her children Jimmy (Martha) Thurman, Carrollton, GA, Betty (John) McMahon Birmingham, AL, Gerald (Lynda) Thurman, Gainesville, GA, her 8 grandchildren Greg (Tina) Thurman, LaGrande, OR, Kara (Brad) Pearson, Douglasville, GA, Jamey (Carrie) McMahon, Birmingham, AL, Joel (Ashley) McMahon, Birmingham, AL, David McMahon, New York, NY, John (Amanda) Thurman, Johnson City, TN, Jeremy (Sherrie) Thurman, Hull, GA and Joy Thurman, Athens, GA, her great granddaughter and 13 great grandsons. She is also survived by her sister Frances Sims Glover Archer, sister-in-law Sarah Sims, many nieces and nephews and lifelong friend Sarah Belle Lee. Her faithful care givers included Mary Brown, Donna D. Carter, Dot Elliott, Vicky Bail and the entire staff of Moringside Assisted Living. Arrangements are being handled by A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home, 2773 North Decatur Road, Decatur, GA 30033. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 11:00 am, in the Chapel of A.S.Turner & Sons. The Rev. Dr. James W. Thurman, Jr., and the Rev. Dr. Gerald Sims Thurman will preside at the service. Visitation will be held before the service at 10:00 a.m. and after the service.
