John Smith Miller, of Atlanta passed away November 1, 2008. He was born September 25, 1914 in Booneville, Mississippi to Maude Lou Smith Miller and John Kedar Miller. He attended schools in Booneville, MS. and Birmingham, Alabama. He was a graduate of Sunflower Junior College (now Mississippi Delta Community College) and attended Mississippi State College. He joined the army in 1941 and served under General George Patton in the 2nd Armored Division. Later, he graduated from officer training school at Fort Belvior, Va and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. In December of that year, he married Eugenia McCrosky. He served in the European theater during World War II as Battalion commander of Company "B" in the 172nd Engineer Combat Battalion. After World War II ended, he returned to civilian life and enrolled in Georgia Institute of Technology, graduating in 1949 as a Civil Engineer. He remained in the Army Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. His engineering career took him many places. Besides serving over five years with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, he worked with the Mississippi State Highway Department. He was Senior Engineer with the city of Mobile, Alabama; Resident Engineer for a year on Jekyll Island, which he mapped for the State of Georgia; three years as an engineer in the Building and Bridge Department of the Central of Georgia Railway Company; two years as a civil engineer with Urban Renewal Administration. He formed his own company in 1957 and added partners, Earl Stevenson and John Steinichen. His company created many beautiful neighborhoods out of slums. Some of his renewal projects include Lithonia Plaza and City Park; the new city hall and downtown Sylacauga, Al; Childersburg, AL; and many others in south Georgia. He was planner and consultant for the Birmingham, AL Civic Center in its first phase of development and helped plan roads and tennis courts for Stillwaters Resort in Dadeville, AL. He was also development engineer for Alexander City, AL Housing Authority, helping redevelop the north side of town. He was a member of Briarcliff Baptist Church, the Yaarab Shrine Temple, the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar, the Sagamore Hills Civic Association, Druid Hills Golf Club and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eugenia; his sisters, Ernestine Stephens and Jacqueline McAdams; and his nephew, James Stephens. He is survived by his wife, Lois Stipick Miller; his step-children, Pamela Berry, Michael and Jennie Stipick, Mary Jane and Michael Anderson; six step-grandchildren; and four step-great grandchildren; nieces, Joan Bergland and Bettye Wirth; nephews, John McAdams; and many great nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Thursday, November 13th, 11 a.m. at Briarcliff Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Bigger officiating.
