Mrs. J. D. (Lucy) Flowers

December 17, 1913 — July 24, 2008

Mrs. Lucy Allgood Flowers, wife of the late John Doyle (J.D.) Flowers, Sr., entered into rest on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at The Place At Martinez, Augusta, GA.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 28 at A.S. Turner & Sons with Rev. Herb Woodyard officiating.  Burial will follow in MelwoodCemetery, Stone Mountain, GA.     Mrs. Flowers, daughter of the late Dr. Conrad L. Allgood, Sr. and Mrs. Lucy Faulkner Allgood, was born in Scottdale, Georgia.  She lived in Avondale Estates and called DeKalbCounty her home for 94 years.  She was married to the late John Doyle Flowers, Sr. for 38 years until his death on March 7, 1978.  Mrs. Flowers was an active member of NorthClarendonBaptistChurch and regularly attended Sunday school and church services until the last few years of her life.  For many years she worked with children in VacationBibleSchool and taught a Sunday school class for teenage girls.  A member of the Dorcas Sunday School class, she enjoyed transporting to and from church her class members who had no transportation or were unable to drive.  Mrs. Flowers was a member of the Starlight Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star as well as the Baron DeKalb Chapter of The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  She also enjoyed membership in the DeKalbCounty and Georgia Retired Educators Associations.  Following graduation from AvondaleHigh School and The University of Georgia, Mrs. Flowers began a teaching career that spanned 30 years in the DeKalb County School System.  She was active in organizing and carrying out fund-drive activities throughout her career to provide schools with resources to better educate students.  Following retirement Mrs. Flowers traveled extensively.  She enjoyed traveling with friends and family members to Japan, China, the Holy Land, most of Europe, England, Ireland, Scotland, and Egypt.  All who knew Mrs. Flowers remember her as a Christian woman; friendly, charitable, a loving wife, and a good mother to her sons.  She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law John and Carol Flowers of Evans, GA, and Conrad Flowers of Franklinton, LA; granddaughters, Robyn Bailey (Steven) of Augusta, GA and Jennifer Cheek (Eric) of Atlanta; grandsons, Andrew Flowers of New Orleans, LA, and Jeffrey Flowers of Lilburn, GA; sisters Alice Virginia Allgood Clark of Stockbridge, GA, Dr. Dorothy Allene Allgood Denton of Douglasville, GA, Marjorie Jane Allgood Campbell of Locust Grove, GA; sisters-in-law Alice Muschler Allgood of Marietta, GA and Mary Simpson Allgood of Lilburn, GA.  She was preceded in death by sisters Mary Ruth Allgood Roberts and Zoa Allgood Johnson; brothers, James Edward Allgood and Conrad Lacunious Allgood, Jr.; and daughter-in-law Patty Dyer Flowers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church she attended for over 60 years, NorthClarendonBaptistChurch, 260 N. Clarendon Avenue, Avondale Estates, GA, 30002. The family will receive friends at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, July 27, 2008.
