Myrtle Gross Newberry, 88, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2017, at her home at Park Springs, Stone Mountain, Georgia, with her daughters by her side.
Myrtle was born May 15, 1929, to Willie Winston Gross and Lila Mae Callaham Gross in Atlanta, Georgia. Her parents and sister Mozelle Gross Christian and brother Winston Gross predecease her.
Myrtle was graduated from Girls High Atlanta. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from the University of Georgia in 1950 and worked as a home economist for several years.
On March 15, 1958, at the First Baptist Church of Atlanta, Myrtle married William Colvard Newberry. Bill spent his career with the Georgia Power Company, and Myrtle was active with the Women of the Georgia Power Company. She also devoted her time to the Lower Altamaha River Historical Society and the Ashantilly Center. She was a member of Mountain Park Methodist Church.
Myrtle is survived by her three daughters: Lila Newberry Bradley (Allen), Elizabeth Newberry Anheier (Norman), and Mozelle Newberry Cole (Michael), as well as her grandchildren Rachel Anheier, Jeffrey Anheier, Kathleen Cole, Mickey Cole, Teddy Cole, Jack Cole, Will Bradley, Joe Bradley, and Lucy Bradley.
Myrtle will be cremated and her ashes placed in the White Chimney River of McIntosh County, where Bill’s ashes were also placed in 1996 .
A memorial service will be held July 25, 2017, at 2pm at A.S. Turner and Sons at 2773 North Decatur Road Decatur Georgia, with visitation at 1pm.
