Nicholas Frank Baches, 78, passed away peacefully at his home on August 21, 2014, after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis disease. Mr. Baches was born in the town of Megalo Chorio, Evrytania, Greece in 1935. During WWII his family lost their finances as most people did in Greece and in 1951 the family came to the United States, as his father had been a US citizen since 1925. The family settled in Augusta, Georgia. He graduated from Jr. College of Augusta in 1956. In the same year he was drafted to the US Army, and served as a Private First Class, mostly in Northern Italy until 1958. Upon his return to the States, he started his career at Zesto Snack Shops, first as an employee and then as co-owner from 1960 To 1997 of two locations, at Clairmont and North Decatur Roads and Glenwood and Candler Roads, respectively. In 1997 he retired, as Multiple Sclerosis limited his activities.
He was a lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation of Atlanta and also of the Evrytanian Association of America, Velouchi. He was also a member of the following organizations: 52 year member of AHEPA, the Association of Megalohoriton of America, and the Megalohoriton Saint Paraskevi, of Athens, Greece. He loved animals, especially his cats, Millie and Sally, and was a big supporter of animal welfare charities as well as human charities. He is survived by his sisters, Georgia Baches Vastakis (Nikolaos), Pauline Baches Giannakopoulos (Pete) and Martha Baches Lucas, God-son, Steven N. Vastakis, many nieces, nephews and cousins in the United States and Greece. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Golfo Baches and Brother-in-law Howard P. Lucas. Trisagion Service will be held Friday, August 22, 2014 at 7:00 pm, at A. S. Turner and Sons chapel. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00pm
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 9:00 am at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation at 2500 Clairmont Road, Decatur, GA with The Reverend Paul Kaplanis, The Reverend Christos Mars and The Reverend Anthony Stratis officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, Tucker, GA. Donations can be made to the Annunciation Cathedral Endowment Fund or Multiple Sclerosis Association of America.
