Niki Julias Tranakos, age 97, the grand dame of the Tranakos clan, passed away on Monday, November 22, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband Peter A. Tranakos Mrs. Tranakos and her late husband were retired restauranteur from Covington VA. She was an active member of the Greek Orthodox Church since moving to Decatur in 1982. Funeral services will be held at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, 2500 Clairmont Rd. on Monday, November 29, 2010, at 11:00 am. A Prayer Service will be held in the Chapel of A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home on Sunday, November 28, 2010, at 4:30 pm with visitation with the family following until 6:00 pm. Mrs. Tranakos is survived by her son Arthur P. Tranakos, her 102 year old sister Mary Kostel of Clifton Forge, VA, and five beloved grandchildren, Peter Tranakos, Laura Trask, Caroline Hanna, Sarah Katherine Tranakos, and Elizabeth Whirrett, and ten great-grandchildren. Grave side services will be at Alleghany Memorial Park, Covington, VA on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gifts of Love Program of Atlanta's Ypapanti Philoptochos Chapter (to help metro families in need).
