Nolan Austin Goodyear, Jr. (personally and well-known as "Nag"), of Decatur, died Sunday, December 19, 2004. He was born in Oxford, Georgia on February 27, 1913, the son of the late Professor Nolan A. and Marie Lane Evans Goodyear; and brother of the late Dr. William E. Goodyear. The family moved to Atlanta when Professor Goodyear came to the newly established Emory University. "Nag" was a member of the first graduating class of the present Druid Hills High School in 1929, and graduated from Emory University in 1933, where he was an active member of Chi Phi fraternity. Mr. Goodyear served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre in World War II, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in communications. He was with Right-of-Way-Acquisitions for the Georgia Highway Department for many years, and upon retirement served in public relations and security at Piedmont Hospital. He was the youngest charter member of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church and later joined the North Decatur United Methodist Church, where he became an active member of the Reese Griffin Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Mrs. Emma Steadman Goodyear. Mr. Goodyear is survived by daughters, Marsh G. Green of Atlanta, Natalie G. Harris of Decatur; sister, Marie Goodyear O'Steen of DeKalb, IL; granddaughter, Paige Harris of Duluth; and great grandson, Christopher Gomez of Duluth. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 21st in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons with Rev. Fred Shelnutt, Dr. Judson C. Ward and Chaplain Larry Connolly officiating. Interment Decatur Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
